Arc

Arc, developed by The Browser Company, is a web browser designed to rethink traditional browsing with a focus on productivity and customization. First released in 2022 for macOS and later expanded to Windows and iOS, Arc is built on Chromium but introduces a unique interface that replaces conventional tabs with a sidebar-based navigation system. It emphasizes workspace organization, split-screen browsing, and a distraction-free experience.

In early 2024, The Browser Company announced plans to rebuild Arc from scratch, moving away from Chromium to develop its own custom browser engine. This decision aims to give the company greater control over performance, privacy, and innovation, rather than relying on Google’s infrastructure. While this shift could foster more diversity in the browser market, it also presents challenges, such as ensuring compatibility with web standards and extensions. During the transition, Arc will continue using Chromium while development progresses on the new foundation.
