The BlackBerry Browser was the default web browser on BlackBerry devices, playing a key role in mobile web access during the early 2000s and 2010s. Initially built on the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) infrastructure, it used data compression to optimize web pages for limited mobile bandwidth. Early versions were based on proprietary technology, but later iterations, starting with BlackBerry 6 in 2010, adopted the WebKit rendering engine for improved performance and modern web standards support.
With the decline of BlackBerry’s smartphone market share and the rise of iOS and Android, the BlackBerry Browser became increasingly obsolete. The transition to BlackBerry 10 in 2013 brought a more capable browser, but it failed to reverse the company’s fortunes. As BlackBerry OS support officially ended in 2022, the browser, along with the platform, was effectively discontinued.
