About

The legacy version of Microsoft Edge, known as EdgeHTML, was first introduced in 2015 alongside Windows 10. Built on Microsoft’s proprietary EdgeHTML engine, it was designed to be a modern, fast browser with deep integration into the Windows operating system. EdgeHTML introduced features such as Cortana integration, a reading mode, and the ability to annotate web pages directly within the browser.

However, despite its innovative features, EdgeHTML struggled to gain traction with users, partly due to compatibility issues with certain websites and a smaller library of extensions compared to browsers like Chrome and Firefox. In 2019, Microsoft announced it would rebuild Edge using the Chromium engine, marking the end of the EdgeHTML version. Legacy Edge was gradually phased out with the release of the new Chromium-based Edge in 2020.
